IT Consulting Sydney

Independent IT consulting · Sydney

IT consulting for Sydney organisations, with nothing to sell you

Sydney runs on regulated industries and head-office functions, and both attract technology decisions with consequences well beyond IT. Beyond Technology gives boards and executive teams a senior, independent view of those decisions, and we sell nothing but the advice.

Independent and vendor neutral. The advice is the product; nothing else is for sale.

The hardest technology decisions in Sydney are governance decisions

Sydney holds the densest concentration of regulated businesses in the country: banks, insurers, superannuation funds, and the professional services firms that serve them. For an APRA-regulated entity a technology decision is also an operational risk decision, and CPS 230 has made that explicit by pushing accountability for service providers and critical operations up to the board.

The other Sydney pattern is the head-office problem. National organisations run their executive function from Sydney while operations sit in other states, so the technology strategy has to work for people who are nowhere near the decision. That is a governance and communication problem before it is a technical one.

Sydney also has the most competitive technology labour market in Australia. Senior internal technology leadership is expensive here, which is why mid-sized Sydney organisations are often the ones that most need an independent adviser they can call on without a full-time hire.

Who we work with in New South Wales

Financial services and insurance, where operational risk obligations now sit squarely on the board. Professional services firms carrying client data they cannot afford to mishandle. National organisations with a Sydney head office and operations spread across other states.

How an engagement works

Beyond Technology’s head office is in Sydney, so Sydney engagements mix remote sessions with time in the room. Most engagements start with a conversation and an independent look at what you run, what it costs and where the risk sits, and we come to you for the board sessions, vendor negotiations and program starts where being in the room matters. When the first question is cost, providers or risk, an IT audit in Sydney is often where that starts, or a cyber security audit when the question is security alone. The same method sits behind all of our independent technology consulting, wherever the client is. If you are still comparing firms, our guide to choosing a technology consulting firm sets out the questions to ask.

The problem

Nobody in the room is independent

In Sydney the pressure usually arrives from outside: a regulator, a client’s security questionnaire, or an insurer asking questions the organisation cannot answer. Most organisations we meet in Sydney have an IT provider, a handful of software vendors, and nobody inside whose job is to judge whether any of it is right. Every voice in the conversation earns money from the answer, which is a difficult position to make good decisions from.

Your IT provider also writes your strategy

The organisation running your operations is the one advising you on what to buy next, which is poor governance no matter how good they are.

We review the provider and the plan without wanting either job. We do not deliver implementation work.

You are paying for things nobody has reviewed

Licences, circuits, backups and support tiers accumulate quietly, and the invoice becomes the only record of what was decided.

The assessment starts by finding what you are actually paying for and whether it is still being used.

Advice that was written for someone else

Most technology advice is written for a different organisation: bigger, smaller, or in another industry, with a budget and a risk appetite that are not yours.

Every recommendation is sized to your real constraints, or it is not a recommendation.

Where we would start

Where we usually start in Sydney

First

A map of every third party your critical operations depend on, and what happens when each one fails. Most Sydney organisations discover the list is longer than the register says.

Second

A test of whether the controls described in your last client security questionnaire actually exist as described.

Third

A number on what an outage costs per day, because every subsequent investment argument depends on it.

Why independence matters

We have nothing to sell you except the advice

Beyond Technology does not sell hardware or software, does not resell vendor products, and does not deliver the implementation work we recommend. Every consultant here holds an engineering qualification and an MBA, so the recommendation arrives in commercial terms. That is the difference between a technology decision and a purchase someone else made for you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Sydney?

Yes. Our head office is in Crows Nest, on Sydney’s lower north shore, and we have offices in Brisbane and Perth. Sydney engagements run on a mix of remote sessions and on-site time for the meetings where being in the room matters.

Can you work with our APRA obligations?

We advise on the technology decisions that sit underneath those obligations: which service providers you depend on, what happens when one fails, and whether the controls you have described actually exist. We are advisers, not auditors, and our independent IT assessment is usually the fastest way to find out where you stand.

Is the first conversation free?

Yes, and there is no obligation attached. A consultant spends time on your environment and comes back with what they found. Take the findings and act on them yourself, hand them to your provider, or engage us. All three are fine outcomes.

Do you deliver the work you recommend?

No. Beyond Technology does not sell hardware or software, does not resell vendor products, and does not deliver implementation work. Every consultant holds an engineering qualification and an MBA, so the recommendation arrives in commercial terms and with nothing riding on it.
