IT Consulting for Small and Mid-Sized Business

Independent IT advice · Small and mid-sized business

IT consulting for Australian SMEs, starting with a free assessment

Smaller organisations get the worst of the technology market: advice from the people selling the product, and no one senior enough to tell them whether it is right. We start with a free initial assessment, and we sell no technology at all.

No obligation, no pitch. If there is nothing worth doing, we will say so.

The problem

Nobody in the room is independent

A smaller organisation usually has one IT provider, a couple of software vendors, and no internal person whose job is to judge whether any of it is right. Every voice in the conversation earns money from the answer, which is a difficult position to make good decisions from.

Your IT provider also writes your strategy

The organisation running your operations is the one advising you on what to buy next, which is poor governance no matter how good they are.

We review the provider and the plan without wanting either job. We do not deliver implementation work.

You are paying for things nobody has reviewed

Licences, circuits, backups and support tiers accumulate quietly, and the invoice becomes the only record of what was decided.

The assessment starts by finding what you are actually paying for and whether it is still being used.

Enterprise advice does not fit

Most technology advice is written for organisations with a CIO, a security team and a budget you do not have.

Every recommendation is sized to your real constraints, or it is not a recommendation.

The free assessment

What you get, and what it costs

It costs nothing and it is not a sales meeting. A consultant spends time on your environment and comes back with what they found.

A conversation

What the business does, where technology gets in the way, and what you are spending. Half an hour, with a consultant rather than a salesperson.

A straight read

Where the risk sits, where the money is going, and which two or three things would make the most difference. In plain language.

Your decision

Take the findings and act on them yourself, hand them to your provider, or engage us. All three are fine outcomes, and we say so up front.

Why independence matters

We have nothing to sell you except the advice

Beyond Technology does not sell hardware or software, does not resell vendor products, and does not deliver the implementation work we recommend. Every consultant here holds an engineering qualification and an MBA, so the recommendation arrives in commercial terms. For a smaller organisation that is the difference between a technology decision and a purchase someone else made for you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the assessment really free?

Yes, and there is no obligation attached. We do it because the organisations that benefit most from independent advice are usually the ones who have never been offered any.

Will you tell us to sack our IT provider?

Only if that is what the evidence says, and it usually is not. More often the provider is doing what they were asked to do, and the gap is that nobody has been setting the direction.

How small is too small?

If technology decisions are landing on an owner, a finance manager or an operations lead who already has a full role, you are the right size for this conversation.

What happens to what you find?

It is yours. Act on it internally, give it to your provider, or engage us for the work. We are not precious about which.

General Cybersecurity Practices

Evaluate how your organisation approaches cybersecurity. This section focuses on key practices such as regular audits, cultural awareness, and foundational IT governance policies.

Does your organisation's Cybersecurity and/or IT function have a regular independent review or audit?(Required)
Regular reviews or audits help identify vulnerabilities, ensure compliance, and enhance your organisation's security posture. This question assesses how proactive your organisation is in maintaining cybersecurity standards.
Would you characterize the culture of your organisation to be "aware and alert to cyber risks?"(Required)
A strong cybersecurity culture involves awareness at all levels of the organisation. This question evaluates how informed and prepared your team is in addressing potential risks.
Does the organisation have a documented policy or communicated advice on the authorised use (or otherwise) of Generative AI tools?(Required)
Generative AI tools can introduce security risks if not properly managed. This question identifies whether your organisation has guidelines to mitigate potential misuse.
Does the business have a clear service level agreement or expectation for IT service?(Required)
Defined service level agreements (SLAs) establish accountability and ensure IT services meet organisational needs. This question evaluates how structured your IT service delivery is.
