Fractional CIO for Mining and Resources

A fractional CIO for mining and resources, corporate and site

Resources organisations carry two technology estates with different rules, different risks and usually different owners. A fractional CIO holds both to one strategy without pretending they are the same problem.

Independent and vendor neutral. The advice is the product; nothing else is for sale.

Two estates, one board, and a commodity cycle setting the budget

The corporate estate looks like any other business: finance, HR, collaboration, reporting. The operational estate does not. It runs the plant, it has asset lives measured in decades, its vendors are effectively irreplaceable, and it cannot be patched on a Tuesday because someone read an advisory. Treating both as one IT problem is how resources organisations end up with either an insecure plant or a paralysed office.

Capital discipline follows the commodity cycle, which means technology investment competes with production capital and loses whenever the case is written in technology language. The work is translating the technology decision into the commercial one: what it protects, what it unlocks, and what it costs to defer.

The third pattern is the contractor ecosystem. Sites run on people who are not your employees, using systems you do not own, connecting to networks you are accountable for. Most access and identity problems in this sector start there.

Where the demand sits

Operators reconciling corporate IT with operational technology under one governance model. Mining services, engineering and logistics firms meeting the security requirements their clients pass down. Organisations with remote sites, contractor workforces and connectivity that constrains platform choice.

How we work with organisations here

Beyond Technology’s head office is in Sydney, with offices in Brisbane and Perth, and we work with organisations across Australia. A fractional CIO engagement runs on an agreed weekly cadence, most of it remote, with on-site time booked around the meetings where being in the room changes the decision: board and executive sessions, vendor negotiations, and the start of any major program. Where we would start

The first 90 days

First

Separate the two estates formally, with different risk appetites, change windows and vendor obligations for corporate IT and operational technology.

Second

Map contractor access: who reaches your systems, through whose devices, and what happens to that access when the contract ends.

Third

Rewrite the largest pending technology decision as a commercial case, in production terms, and see whether it still ranks where it currently sits.

The problem

The full-time CIO maths does not work for mid-sized organisations

In resources the pressure is the cycle: capital discipline that treats technology as overhead until an incident reframes it as risk. Cloud services now give mid-sized organisations access to enterprise-scale infrastructure that used to be out of reach, and with it, the strategic responsibility a full-time CIO exists to carry. Most organisations cannot justify that salary, and the few that make the hire often cannot offer enough to keep them.

The salary is hard to justify

A genuine strategic CIO costs more than most mid-tier budgets can carry, so the role goes unfilled and the decisions still get made, just without senior scrutiny.

You buy a defined weekly commitment from a top-level CIO, not a headcount, the same senior scrutiny that ended years of vendor-led IT drift for one of our clients.

Even a good hire is hard to keep

When mid-sized organisations do land an experienced CIO, the role rarely offers enough challenge to hold them for long.

Our consultants work across many organisations; the variety is the job, so the experience stays with you.

Small technical decisions carry large consequences

Choices that look minor today can put you at a lasting competitive disadvantage when they are made without the longer-term picture, for example the cloud spend that quietly leaks away on infrastructure nobody is using.

Every significant decision gets senior, independent scrutiny before it locks you in.

How it works

A 12-month subscription, shaped around your organisation

Working session over a printed technology roadmap

Commencement

We work with you directly to define the structure of the subscription: the cadence, the governance and the advisory priorities specific to your organisation.

A weekly commitment

Your CIO attends to your technical governance and advisory needs within an agreed weekly investment of effort. Not a retainer that sits idle; a cadence that keeps decisions moving.

Across the year

Integrated services through the 12 months: ongoing strategic planning, technical governance and a trusted advisor to your executive leadership team.

What it changes

The outcomes our clients engage us for

Reduce IT cost

Identify where your IT spend is not pulling its weight and take advantage of the technology already available to your organisation.

Eliminate IT risk

Many organisations carry significant IT failure risk without understanding the potential or the consequences, the same gap covered in our guide to sustaining IT governance. Quantifying and mitigating it usually improves day-to-day service as well.

Improve IT service

Properly aligning IT to direct business requirements, not to whatever technology is already available, and improving the communication between IT and the business, delivers real efficiency and capability gains.

Why independence matters

Your CIO should have nothing to sell you

In professions like law and medicine, a conflicted advisor can be struck off. Technology has no such register, so conflicts of interest are everywhere: advisors who quietly monetise the products they recommend. Beyond Technology maintains absolute independence from every vendor and technology. What you get in return is what we call Actionable Advice: accurate, accessible recommendations, fit for purpose for your organisation, that do not require a technical qualification to understand and do not assume a bigger budget than you have.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you work on operational technology as well as corporate IT?

We advise on the governance across both, which is usually where the failure sits. We are not a plant control systems integrator; we make sure the two estates have a coherent strategy, an agreed risk position and a boundary that someone owns.

Our sites are remote. Does that change the engagement?

It changes what we recommend more than how we work. Remote sites make connectivity, support models and vendor response times strategic rather than operational decisions, and they rule out platforms that assume conditions your sites do not have.

How do we justify technology spend against production capital?

By writing the case in commercial terms, which is the job. What the investment protects, what it makes possible, and the cost of deferring it for another cycle. Our interim and transitional CIO service covers the same ground when the need is a defined project rather than an ongoing role.

How much of the CIO’s time do we get?

The subscription is built around an agreed weekly investment of effort. We define the cadence and structure with you during commencement, bespoke to your requirements, so the commitment matches the decisions you actually face.

Why does independence matter in this role?

Because a CIO who profits from what they recommend is not advising you, they are selling to you. We are independent of every vendor and technology, so the advice you receive is free from conflict of interest.
